If you’d like to become more independent, 2021 is as good a time to start as any! But how exactly can you become more independent? Here are our top tips.

Manage your finances

We get it- finances can be scary! But no matter how uncomfortable your bank balance may make you feel, getting control over your personal finances is a key part in becoming independent. When you get to a point where you’re earning and managing your own money, you’ll find a lot more freedom in what you can do and buy. But don’t forget that having a budget and spending responsibly are crucial when becoming an independent person. Another reason why financial independence is so important is because it keeps you safe from exploitation and financial abuse- you can learn more about this here.

Make time for growth

If your schedule is pretty busy with school, varsity or work, you may find that you aren’t getting enough time to really grow in the ways you’d like to. While there are only 24 hours in the day, if you’re able to dedicate an hour or two each day to learn a new skill, practice a hobby or do some emotional growth, then over time you’ll be a well-rounded, independent person.

Ask yourself for advice

Asking others for advice can be helpful, in order to get an outside perspective. But if you’re relying on what others recommend all the time, then chances are you aren’t listening to your own inner voice enough. One easy way to do this is to sit down and literally ask yourself, or write down your questions in a journal. It may seem silly at first, but you’ll quickly see how beneficial it can be to check in with yourself for advice. Another important thing you should do often is to hype yourself up! Think about all of your good qualities, the things that make you a boss. If you need a playlist to get into that zone, we’ve got you covered too- check it out here.

Show, don’t tell

If you’re a teen or young adult, then you’re all too familiar with that awkward stage between being a kid, and growing into an independent adult. This life stage takes years, and it’s normal to feel impatient sometimes- especially if those around you are still treating you like a child. The best way to show others you’re capable of taking care of yourself, is to show them. Take on more responsibility, even if it’s small things like house chores or a part-time job. Keep your word, and do what you need to without having to be reminded. By showing you can take care of small things, people are more likely to trust you with the big stuff and eventually respect you as an adult.

Independence doesn’t happen overnight- it takes years to earn and build up for yourself. Be persistent in 2021, dedicate time to improving yourself and get more control over your life’s journey. You can do it!
