People are always preaching about the importance of being comfortable in your own skin, and while that’s great, we may not always know how to actually do it. With all the pressure that social media puts on women to look a certain way, it can be difficult to love and accept yourself the way that you are. That’s why we’ve put together a list of practical things you can start doing to love the skin you’re in.
Spend time alone with yourself
One way to get more comfortable with yourself is to learn to spend time alone. You could take yourself out to lunch, take a walk alone in the park once a week, or just spend some time reading your favourite books. Find an ‘alone-time practice’ that works for you and be dedicated to it. You could even go as far as switching off from social media so that there are no distractions. Although it might feel a little bit strange at first, once you’re used to spending time alone, you’ll be more comfortable with just being with your own thoughts.
Resist the urge to compare yourself to others
Often we look at other people’s lives and looks and think that they’re doing a lot better than we are. While this happens to a lot of people, it’s important to learn how to quiet down negative and envious thoughts in order to focus on your own growth and progress. People who are comfortable with themselves don’t give in to jealousy and self-pity, instead they find ways to improve themselves by learning from those who might be doing better. If someone has traits that you really admire, then it’s a good idea to compliment them and find out how they achieved whatever they have.
Let go of the need for validation
We know this is easier said than done, but you can let go of the need to be validated by other people. You don’t need anyone else to tell you you’re worthy, or lovable or beautiful - you can do this for yourself. Accept the fact that not everyone is going to understand you or approve of the way you speak, dress or act - and that’s okay. You don’t need permission to be your authentic self!
Take care of your body and mind
One way to feel good about your body is to take care of it. Could you be making better choices when it comes to the food you eat? Make the change. Should you be exercising more? Do it. The healthier your decisions, the better you’ll feel. Also, while you’re taking care of your body, remember to feed your mind as well. Exercise and healthy food are just as good for your brain as they are for the rest of your body - throw in a bit of meditation, sleep and wholesome reading, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the new and improved you.
Remember what true beauty is
If you’re feeling a bit inadequate or are at odds with your body, then it’s important to remind yourself of the real meaning of beauty; which is what is inside of you. Focus on being kind to yourself and others, shut down judgemental thoughts and devote yourself to a life of positivity. These are the things that really count in the end. Also, don’t believe everything you see on social media and television - the real world doesn’t consider just one set of facial features and body type as beautiful. Learn to appreciate your own features, give yourself compliments and know that you’re gorgeous as you are.
It’s normal to feel insecure sometimes, but if you invest in yourself by practising the tips above, you’ll feel a lot more empowered and happy in your skin. Got any questions about self-esteem and confidence? Remember you can always reach out to us!
