What to do if you’ve chosen the wrong subject in high school

study tips study guide high school subject choice

It’s the beginning of your school year, and you’ve quickly realised that you’ve chosen the absolute wrong subject. This can make you feel discouraged right off the bat, but don’t lose hope just yet- there are ways to make this situation better. Here’s what you can do.

When it comes to having chosen the wrong subject, there are two main possibilities to consider. You could either stay with the subject and make it work for you, or change to a different subject.

How to change the subject

Whether or not you have the option to change to a different subject will depend on your school’s individual policies. It helps if you can prove to your school’s administration that you’re serious about changing your subjects. Explain your situation in the form of a formal letter, and consider speaking to your teachers in person so that they can better understand why you need the change. Also, be sure to get your parents/guardians to support your decision. They may need to step in during this process.

Be aware that there may be a vetting or interview process before they allow you to change your subject. If this is the case at your school, remember to be well-prepared and do your best. This will show that you’ll do well in the subject you’re wanting to change to.

How to stay and make it work

If changing the subject isn’t an option for you for one reason or another, there are still ways to stay and make it work. The first step would be to approach your teacher, and explain to them that you are struggling. Their job is to help you out, so you shouldn’t be afraid to ask them for assistance when you need it.

Next, have a look at what options you have in terms of extra lessons and tutors. If you can hire a private tutor (either in person or online), that’s one good way to improve your marks. However, even if hiring a private tutor isn’t an option for you, there are tons of free online resources you can make use of. Also, be sure to check in with the school and see what after-school extra lessons or summer school options they have.

Finally, remember that the mindset we have can have a huge impact on the way we handle situations. Have confidence in your abilities, and stay positive. Take on the challenge of making the subject work for you with enthusiasm - you may be surprised at what a difference this makes!

Many students will choose the wrong subject for them- one that’s either too difficult for them, or doesn’t suit their personality and aptitude. What’s important is remembering that there are ways to make this situation better. Good luck!
