She’s given us anthems like Back to the Beach, Suited and Your Eyes. She’s made a movement of her music, inspiring girls to love their quirks and to be independent. Here’s why she’s suited to be this week’s summer flame.

Fun facts

Shekhinah Thandi Donnell was born and raised in Durban. A talented performer, she’s been in numerous musicals, including the hit play, Hairspray. She’s also a university graduate, boasting a Live Performance Degree from AFDA.

How she glows

Shekhinah’s style is quite unique and expressive. She refers to herself as a reformed “tom-boy” since she used to wear signature DC sneakers, colourful skinny jeans and hoodies as a teenager. In recent years, though, her style has changed quite a bit — she’s on trend with bold, unique garments and a face beat to die for. In one of her interviews, Shekhinah speaks about coming into her own and finally being confident enough to allow herself to standout; a journey she documents in her debut album, Rose Gold.

Steal her style

We love Shekhinah’s statement brow and bold contour, in fact, this is a holiday look you can rock to festivals and parties with friends. Her style is about being daring yet comfortable, and to have confidence as your greatest accessory. Maybe it’s a good idea to dig for the Shekhinah inside of all of us and embrace being different.

Why she’s a flame

“Being true to yourself means so much to me – because everyone will like to tell you who you are, what you are, how you act, how you should do things. But only you can truly govern who you are, what you do."

We couldn’t have said it better. Shekhinah’s definitely a flame for celebrating her individuality, embracing her flaws and being an undeniable example of self-love and self-acceptance. She’s not afraid to speak about her weight, how she’s struggled with it and how she’s finally come to love her body despite criticism from others.

Shekhinah is talented, educated, stylish and successful. There’s lots that we’ve learnt from her and we’re excited to see more from her in the future!
