Staying safe at your matric dance

Matric dance is such an exciting time, and we don’t often think about safety because we assume that our school has everything taken care of - right? Well, here’s how to make sure you’re having fun without putting yourself in danger.

Plan it out

Your Matric dance will probably consist of several events at different venues such as pre-drinks, the dance itself and the afterparty. That’s why the first way to make sure you’re safe is to plan out your evening - how will you get from location to location? From where and at what time will you need to leave the venues? Do you have your transportation’s contact numbers? A little bit of planning goes a long way.

Safety in numbers

Try not to end up on your own at any point of the evening. Whether you’re having fun with your squad or even just your date and another friend or two, it’s best to be in a group instead of being alone.

Alcohol and drugs

Let’s be real- we all know what goes down sometimes at Matric dances. Chances are, the temptation to try alcohol or other drugs may come up on the night. And by now, you’ve surely heard all the warnings before. But seriously- overindulging with alcohol or trying drugs at your MD is not only dangerous, it can also really ruin your night. Remember that you only get one Matric dance- and the last thing you want to remember it by is getting too drunk or high and embarrassing yourself or worse, putting yourself in harm’s way.

Dating pressures

The excitement of your Matric dance night is great, and it’s normal to feel a bit more free and want to get intimate with your date. However, remember that getting physical is risky business, which exposes you to things such as Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and unwanted pregnancy. Even if you’re lucky enough to avoid those, you may still move too fast and end up with regrets and a broken heart.

Juuuust in case

Remember to charge your phone and have everything you need on hand (such as your ID and some cash, should you need it). Have your friends know your emergency contact numbers (such as your parents’ numbers) and, for those who usually wear it, remember to have your medical bracelet on (don’t worry, it won’t ruin your outfit and no one will even notice it). These little things can go a long way in ensuring that you’re staying safe.

Your Matric dance is one of the milestones in your life, so while you might think it’s overkill to think so much about safety, trust us- feeling safe on your special night will make you more free, open and ready to have a great time!
