Arriving on campus as a first year student can be super exciting, as well as a bit intimidating. Want to know how to navigate your varsity like a boss? We’ve put together some tips just for you!

Learn your locations

This is a big struggle for first year students, especially if your campus is huge. Getting a head start on learning where important stuff is located is the first thing you should do as soon as you arrive. Important locations include any halls and venues you’ll need to frequent for lectures and tutorials, as well as your lecturers’ offices. Using a map is useful- you can either print one out from your varsity’s website or ask for one during your orientation week.

Having a walk around campus before your first day will also give you a good idea of how long it takes you to get from one place to another- this is super important for your time management- trust us, you don’t want to be late for your first class!

Know your elders

The seniors at your varsity or college may seem intimidating, but they have the best advice when it comes to the ins and outs of your specific campus. Don’t be afraid to approach someone from second or third year and ask them any questions you may have. Most of them will be more than happy to help you- after all, they’ve been in your shoes before!

Make friends

The thought of approaching people in your class can be terrifying, and it will probably be awkward at first because everyone is just as intimidated as you are. However, making friends with your fellow first years is important to start early, because you’ll likely need their help for everything from lecture notes to reminding you when your next assignment is due. Don’t overthink it- just put yourself out there and you’ll find your go-to squad in no time!

Be quick

It’s important for you to always be on top of closing dates and due dates at varsity, because if you miss these you’ll likely get no sympathy. When does tutorial allocation open? When can you join varsity clubs and teams? Keep your eyes and ears open for when the opportunities present themselves, or you’ll end up falling behind.

Write it down

You think you may be able to remember your student number off by heart but you won’t- so write it down. You think you may be able to know your timetable without having to write it down but, you guessed it, you should have it printed out or written down anyway. Campus life comes with a lot more responsibilities, which can quickly get overwhelming if you don’t make a habit of writing stuff down. The sooner you start doing this, the easier varsity life will be for you.

Campus life is very different from school and it comes with a lot of new adjustments you have to make. As long as you stay alert, informed and take charge of your studies and responsibilities, you’ll be fine. Take a deep breath, and own your first year with confidence!
