So you’re finally in Grade 10 and the idea of entering those senior years is a little bit intimidating? Don’t you worry, here’s a full-proof method to make sure you make the best of your last few years of high school.
It’s a balancing act
You can totally be an above average senior and still have a great social life. All you have to do is balance out the time you spend with your books and having fun with friends. Another part of being balanced is keeping a circle of positive, focused people in your life. You don’t need friends who don’t make you feel good or simply don’t think school is important. Remember, the people who do well in their senior high school academics aren’t necessarily the smartest, but those who really apply themselves to their school work.
No such thing as a teacher’s pet
Which brings us to this next point - scrap the term ‘teacher’s pet’. It implies that there’s something wrong with having a good relationship with your teachers when there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, especially as a senior. After all, these are the same teachers who are going to give you testimonials when you apply for university, bursaries and even internships. They’re also going to be your saving grace when things start to get really hectic and you need help with certain concepts. So, why wouldn’t you want a good relationship with them?
We can’t stress the importance of extracurricular activities enough! Sports and other activities look great on your varsity applications and increase your chances of earning any kind of tertiary funding. Also, if you’ve been taking physical education for granted, now is the time to start taking it seriously. PhysEd counts for a huge portion of your final matric mark for Life Orientation and can be the difference between getting a distinction and just missing one.
You’ve gotta have a plan
You don’t need to know exactly what career path you’re going to take in Grade 10, but it helps to understand your interests and start to plan. If you want a bit more guidance on what career might suit you take the CellCgirl Career Interest Test here. This way, you know which subjects you need to do really well in and which ones are required for university entrance, if that’s the route you want to take. It’s also good to train yourself to work towards your university study goals from 10th Grade so that you don’t need a wake up call in matric.
You’re not alone
Whether it’s friends, family, or a mentor - you’re not alone. Your emotional state is just as important as your academic record, so find someone you can trust to talk to if you’re not feeling so great. We’re also here for you if you need advice or just a shoulder to cry on, so don’t hesitate to contact us.
Being a senior in high school may be a big deal, but it’s something you should also enjoy. Take care of yourself, make sure you have a good squad and give school your all, and you’ll be on a one-way train to success!
