Role models like Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates and Beyoncé always talk about the importance of mindset and attitude when it comes to achieving success. But how do you develop a mindset for success? Here are 5 tips.
Mind your language
Your self-talk is really important. What are your beliefs about yourself? Are you constantly beating yourself up about things that go wrong? A mindset of success involves choosing to speak from a place of empowerment rather than helplessness, even when you’re faced with failure.
“Bring acceptance and compassionate self-talk. Say nice things to yourself - you're the only one listening. Tell yourself, I am doing the best I can.” - Gabrielle Bernstein
Be your only competition
One thing successful people don’t do, is compare themselves with other people. There’s nothing wrong with a little bit of healthy competition, but once you start comparing your achievements to those of other people, you might have a problem. Remember, this is your life and you’ve got to focus on being the best possible version of yourself, rather than a copy of someone else.
“Stop thinking you’re doing it all wrong. Your path doesn’t look like anybody else’s because it can’t, it shouldn’t, and it won’t.” - Eleanor Brownn
Surround yourself with like-minded people
Your friends play a huge part in the way you think, speak and act. If you’re hanging out with people who’re more interested in talking about other people and spreading negativity, then you’re likely to be like that too. Be picky with your friends - choose to be around people who focus on their own progress and encourage you to do the same.
“Surround yourself with good people; surround yourself with positivity and people who are going to challenge you to make you better.” - Ali Krieger
Master the art of goal-setting
Setting realistic, attainable goals is the key to actually achieving what you want. One way of setting better goals is to mark smaller milestones for yourself and celebrate each one as you reach it. It’s also good to be extremely specific with your goals from the very beginning - check out this article for tips on how to do this.
“No matter how many goals you have achieved, you must set your sights on a higher one.” - Jessica Savitch
Prioritise your personal growth
One thing a lot of successful famous people speak about is the importance of being growth-oriented. In a talk she gave a few years ago, researcher, Carol Dweck, emphasised the importance of developing a growth mindset. Successful people believe that they can make progress by constantly adopting and developing new skills. They don’t allow themselves to be discouraged by setbacks and failed attempts at doing stuff. They simply try again and keep practising until they’ve mastered whatever it is - and then, they move on to the next challenge.
“I don't like being stagnant. I want to continue to grow and just be better at what I do, and the only way to do that is to keep stepping outside of your comfort zone.” - Vanessa Hudgens
Developing and maintaining a mindset for success doesn’t happen overnight - you’re going to have to work at it and be consistent. We hope these quotes and tips help you aim for and achieve success, however you define it.
