Self-motivation isn’t an easy task, in fact, it’s easy to find yourself thinking about ways to chicken out of your initial goals when the going gets tough, or when faced with unexpected failure. The truth is, you’re going to fail at some things, and getting through school or that gruelling internship isn’t going to be a piece of cake. Despite this though, it's important to stay strong and carry on- so we’ve shared a few quotes to keep you motivated during the most trying times.

Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying 'I will try again tomorrow.’ — Mary Anne Radmacher

We’ve all heard the saying, “take it one day at a time”, and perhaps even taken it for granted. But sometimes, especially those times when you’re about to give up, it’s important to remember that tomorrow’s another day and you can always try again then. You’re not going to achieve all your goals overnight, so allow yourself to make progress daily. It doesn’t have to be huge progress, either, little steps in the right direction make all the difference.

Failure is only the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently. — Henry Ford

So you flunked a test, or got a disappointing mark for an assignment, it’s not the end of the world (trust us). If there’s one thing failure does teach us, it’s to try a different tact. Maybe your study method hasn’t been working, or you need a different sleep routine, perhaps you just need to change the way you make your study notes. Whatever it is, you’re not going to know unless you go back to the drawing board and find some new ways to study. Bottom line: let failure make you smarter.

It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop. — Confucius

So this guy, Confucius, may have been alive before surnames were even a thing, but he’s pretty clued up on a lot of stuff. The first thing being that you don’t have to compare yourself to others, it’s totally fine to do things at your own pace. The biggest mistake though, would be to give up. Whether it’s trig that’s giving you trouble, or you’ve simply hit a slump at work, keep going, keep making small efforts towards your goal and you’ll thank yourself in the long run.

It always seems impossible until it’s done. — Nelson Mandela

We can all agree that uTata and his peers nullified the word “impossible” when they brought an end to years of apartheid and introduced South Africa to the freedom we now enjoy. This just goes to show that it really doesn’t matter how huge your goal is — it’s valid and it’s doable. Like we said before, it’s just going to take a bit of good old hard work. Don’t give up before you’ve tried (or at all), your impossible could be just around the corner.

We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty. — Maya Angelou

We all like to look at our role models in admiration and daydream about how we could be like them one day. How many times have you found yourself scrolling through the timeline wishing all those achievements could be yours? And they could be, you just need to brace yourself through the tough times. No one reaches their dreams without some sort of struggle, so before you become the butterfly, you need to get through the caterpillar phase. It won’t be easy, but it’ll definitely be worth it.

Tough times are inevitable, but it’s your choice to give up or keep going. If you choose the latter, you’re in luck, because the world has loads of help available for people who choose to persevere.
