The last thing you need is to worry about how you’re going to wear your hair every morning when you get ready for school. So, we’ve put together a short list of suggestions for low maintenance hairdos that’ll make going back to reality a little bit easier.

This is probably the neatest and most practical hairstyle, especially if you’ve got an afro. Cornrows are customisable, so you get to choose a style specific to you and get to switch them up every now and then - and they give you the freedom to get up and go in the mornings. Also, they protect your hair against any damage that can be caused by the sun and toxic substances in the environment.

If you’re looking for low maintenance and long-lasting, then braids are just the style for you. They can take three hours or more to do but they’ll last you about six weeks. They’re also pretty customisable, but you’ll have to consult your school’s code of conduct about how far you can go with that, and you can either have long or short twists and normal braids.

Messy bun

We love the classic messy bun (as long as it’s school-appropriate) because it’s cool and stylish, without being too much of a hassle. You can even style your hair before bed, put on a head wrap before going to sleep and then whip it off the next morning. No stress, no fuss.

Going short

If you’re not a fan of combing and styling at all, then this will definitely work for you. Tumelo Mothotoane, Nandi Madida and Loot Love have all made super short hair their signature hairstyle and we’re here for it! You can also switch it up or colour it during the school holidays, and get braided in the colder seasons if you want to. It’s super cool and versatile.

There you have it - easy hairstyles that you can own during the back to school season. Plus, you don’t have to worry about them eating into your prep time or frustrating you while you’re in class.
